Our research
The Alves Fernandes research group specialises in the fabrication and characterisation of atomically precise metal clusters for catalytic applications. Combining top‑down magnetron-sputtering methods with sustainable, reagent-free processes, we engineer "naked" metal clusters –ranging from single atoms to nanoclusters– on tailored surfaces. These catalysts are at the forefront of major energy and environmental challenges, including ammonia synthesis and decomposition, COâ‚‚ conversion, and hydrogen storage.
